The Importance of Ancestors-Genesis Chapter 31: 1-55

If we do not look our history, including our ancestry, then we cannot know who we are in the present nor who we might be in the future. Our ancestry gives us a sense of foundation, which forms the basis of our lives in the present. This foundation helps us to connect to others who are or might be related to us. Ancestral beliefs are deeply dependent on the premise that the souls of the dead may return to the living and influence their lives: that it is possible and acceptable for the living to communicate with the dead and lastly that the living are able to exert an effect on the destiny of deceased ancestors. In some belief systems, ancestors are indeed seen as spiritual who can offer wisdom, protection, and support to their living descendants. The social or non-religious function of ancestor veneration is to cultivate kinship values, such as filial piety, family loyalty, and continuity of the family lineage. The belief is that now that they have passed on, they hold power to intercede with God on our behalf. Ancestors hold the power to bless or curse us when not appeased. However, they also hold the power to bless or curse us when not appeased. As a result, they are feared and honored above God.
